Episode 19 – Dean Randazzo

Shaun Smith and Dean Randazzo chatting Wednesday, May 12 2019 at Ventnor Coffee, in Ventnor City, New Jersey.

Dean Randazzo is a professional surfer, surfing instructor, surf shop owner, real estate agent and four-time cancer survivor. He is the first New Jersey competitor to qualify for the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour. In 2001, at the height of his career, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He won the Garden State Grudge Match in 2002, and again in 2007. In 2004 Randazzo earned MVP at the X Games and won the Red Bull Icebreak.

He is preparing to race a paddleboard 22.5 miles around Absecon Island in the 12th annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Paddle For a Cause. We met at our favorite coffee shop, Ventnor Coffee, to talk about his start in surfing and growing up in Margate and Somers Point, New Jersey, competing against the best surfers in the world, recovering from cancer and his work with the community through the foundation.
