A band called Death
Death

A new feature to The High Note will round up what music rises to the top each Tuesday when new albums are released. My highlights for Tuesday, April 22 include new music from old favorites G. Love & Special Sauce and Death.

Sugar by G. Love & Special Sauce
“Sugar” by G. Love & Special Sauce marks the band’s 20th anniversary.

G. Love & Special Sauce – “Sugar”

Has it really been 20 years? “Sugar” celebrates the milestone anniversary of G. Love & Special Sauce with the return of bassist Jimi “Jazz” Prescott. The Philadelphia rock band tries to capture its 90s spirit with producer Robert Carranza. After a Philadelphia Warped Tour mashup with Fat Mike from NOFX in the early 2000s, G. Love has stayed on my radar ever since. The band will play Aug. 2 at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in the band’s hometown, Aug. 3 at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, N.J. and Aug. 4 at the Ocean City Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J. Check out “Nothing Quite Like Home” below.

Death III
“III” by “Death”

Death “III”

The 70s era proto-punk band from Detroit that choose the name Death and rocked in the face of everyone who wanted African Americans to play Motown, jazz and r&b have released a collection spanning decades – “Death III.” The band’s music went largely unheard by the masses until 2009 when the tapes were dusted off and pulled from an attic and in 2012 “A Band Called Death,” produced by Scott Mosier, brought even more light to this compelling story. The latest collection of songs feature tracks recorded by David Hackney before his death of lung cancer in 2000. Watch the band play “Freakin Out” on The Arsenio Hall Show.
